Subitizing….huh?

My first week of teaching 1st grade for the first time in 11 years of teaching is over. I think I’ve been learning just as much as the students have been learning! I have been introducing WBT (whole brain teaching) to the students and they’ve been doing well with it. If you have been teaching with the enVision math series these first weeks of school, then the next bit of info should be helpful.

I’ve learned a new word, subitizing. What is it? Well, basically it is being able to see a group and be able to tell how many there are in the group without having to count them. As teachers, we use dice and dot cards to teach and reinforce this skill. There are some great freebies out there that help to teach this skill. Click below to see the links on subitizing (scroll down when you get there).

This week’s reflections: open house, teacher meetings, and scrambling!

I know I’ve not posted in..a…long….time but my procrastination indecisiveness concerning my classroom got the best of me and it all came to a head this week. I did a few 12 hour days at the school this week and got my room finished just enough in time for open house on Thursday night. I met all of my kids and parents!!! I was excited they all made it! Keep in mind, this was also the day of our teacher meetings so I knew I had to get things basically ready by Wednesday night; which I did by 9:30pm Wednesday! Whew!

You know, getting a primary grade classroom ready takes sooooo much more time and effort than when I was teaching middle school. Hind sight is 20-20 though and next summer I will hopefully be ready way before the day before open house!

Regrets—

  1. not taking pictures of my classroom before and after the overhaul (with all my moving boxes, etc.),
  2. not being able to be ready for open house earlier than the day before,
  3. spending so much money (I think it is at least $1000, but don’t tell my DH!),
  4. not having my writing and listening center set up yet.

Now, I just need to be mentally prepared for the week and create a schedule template that makes me happy.

As for now, I’m wiped out and need to rest up for Monday, the first day of school! Smile

A New First Grade Blogger and a Freebie

There is a new first grade blogger-teacher over at Cause That's How We Roll in 1B. Go check out Gracie and give her some bloggy love! Why? Well, she is decorating her room in owls, she teaches Treasures reading series in Maryland, and when she showed off her new lesson plan book in a pic I saw the CAFÉ book and D5 book right there in plain view! I think I love her already! Oh wait, I know she’s a keeper because she loves Pinterest too! Another one I can stalk!
My current freebie is a Word Journal that is printed front to back and formatted to be folded and stapled. I have printed these and it did work for me. Just make sure to follow your printers particular instructions on printing front to back. Keep all pages in the order shown, fold all the pages in order in half, staple and it should work. The Google Doc looks a little funky but when you download the PPT version you should be able to edit it or add your name, grade, etc.
